Texas A&M football has started a new first-round NFL draft streak
No. 15 overall pick Kenyon Green could kick off a new streak of Texas A&M football players selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.
Beginning in 2011 when Von Miller was selected No. 2 overall by the Denver Broncos, Texas A&M football had quietly carved out a first-round legacy in the NFL Draft. Every year from 2011 to 2017, Texas A&M had at least one player selected in the first round. Here’s a quick rundown:
2011: Von Miller – No. 2, Denver Broncos
2012: Ryan Tannehill – No. 8, Tennessee Titans
2013: Luke Joeckel – No. 2, Jacksonville Jaguars
2014: Jake Matthews – No. 4, Atlanta Falcons
2014: Mike Evans – No. 7, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2014: Johnny Manziel – No. 22, Cleveland Browns
2015: Cedric Ogbuehi – No. 21, Cincinnati Bengals
2016: Germaine Ifedi – No. 31, Seattle Seahawks
2017: Myles Garrett – No. 1, Cleveland Browns
Then the high draft picks just seemed to stop. The Aggies had a total of 16 players selected over the course of the 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 drafts, combined. None went in the first 32 picks. Two (Christian Kirk, No. 47 to Arizona in 2018, and Erik McCoy, No. 48 to New Orleans in 2019) went in the second round.
Now Texas A&M is back in the first round once again. On Thursday, offensive lineman Kenyon Green was chosen No. 15 overall by the Houston Texans. And that might be the start of a new streak for the crew from College Station, Texas, who should still see a few more players come off the board this weekend.
Texas A&M football made waves when they signed the highest-rated recruiting class in the history of modern recruiting. That class had eight five-star players alone, meaning it’s more than likely the Aggies have a first-rounder (or a few) already waiting in the wings.
Current players like corner Jaylon Jones, running back Devon Achane, wide receiver Ainias Smith, corner Antonio Johnson and safety Demain Richardson will all have a shot to be top 32 picks come this time next year.
Georgi had five players selected in the first round this year. Alabama had two. Texas A&M had one. The Aggies are beginning to recruit like those SEC giants. Sooner than later they’ll be producing top-flight draft talent as well.
