West Virginia Football: Early predictions for the 2022 depth chart
By Daniel Walsh
West Virginia football defense
Nose Tackle: Jordan Jefferson
Defensive Tackle: Dante Stills
Defensive End: Taijh Alston
Bandit: Jared Bartlett
MIKE Linebacker: Lee Kpogba
WILL Linebacker: Lance Dixon
SPEAR: Saint McLeod
Cornerback: Charles Woods
Cornerback: Marcus Floyd
Free Safety: Aubrey Burkes
Cat Safety: Jasir Cox
Defensive Spotlight: Well, the Mountaineers’ defense has certainly shaken things up since the 2021 season. Several of WVU’s defensive starters are elsewhere, including three of the best players in Sean Mahone, Daryl Porter Jr., and Akheem Mesidor.
These departures shouldn’t be too much of a loss for the Mountaineers as they still have Stills and were able to bring in some major talents from the transfer portal in Cox and Kpogba. I might be too high on Cox but I think he’ll become a special defender and someone who can bring some winning culture to WVU after winning three National Championships with the NDSU Bison.
Special Teams
Punter: Kolton McGhee
Kicker: Casey Legg
Long Snapper: Austin Brinkman
Returner: Reese Smith
Special Teams Spotlight: Who would have thought that WVU’s most stable unit would be the special teams? Maybe everyone.
Each one of the starters on special teams has logged significant snaps at their position which makes it an easy positions group to predict. Casey Legg should follow up his good 2021 season with another one in 2022.
