College football’s post-spring Top 25 power rankings for 2022 season
When Dana Holgorsen left West Virginia for Houston, I expected it to be an absolute disaster, but the Cougars are starting to look like serious New Year’s Six contenders. Heck, coming off a 12-2 season and with Clayton Tune returning for his senior season, there’s a chance the Cougars could be this year’s Cincinnati.
I’m incredibly high on Arkansas heading into 2022 because of one man: Sam Pittman. The third-year head coach has improved the Razorbacks in each of his first two seasons as they’ve gone from SEC laughingstock to contender in the blink of an eye. KJ Jefferson returns to lead the offense and the defense adds a number of instant-impact transfers.
Lane Kiffin may not be for everyone, but the self-proclaimed “Portal King” has reloaded after losing guys like Matt Corral, Snoop Conner, Dontario Drummond, and Jerrion Ealy. Jaxson Dart will flourish in this offense along with Zach Evans, Michael Trigg, Jordan Watkins, and Malik Heath who have all come from the portal. Ole Miss might just be a surprise SEC title threat.
Mario Cristobal takes over for Manny Diaz who was replaced in a rather awkward fashion but the Hurricanes should be able to move forward with a better recruiter in charge. Tyler Van Dyke will be one of the better quarterbacks in the ACC and that offense should be fun to watch, but all eyes will be on the defense. The talent is there.
Kalani Sitake was a hot name during this offseason’s coaching carousel, but BYU retaining him was a massive victory. In my opinion, Jaren Hall is the best quarterback in college football that no one is talking about and if Christopher Brooks can fill a Tyler Allgeier-sized hole in the backfield, BYU may not skip a beat after a huge 2021 season.
