Tennessee football has already landed one five-star prospect in the 2023 recruiting class and could be getting another in five-star wideout Carnell Tate.

The recruitment of five-star wide receiver Carnell Tate is heating up and after an impromptu visit to see Tennessee football again this weekend (and to watch a baseball game), the Vols are trending in the right direction.

Tate recently took an official visit to Tennessee football but this trip wasn’t expected and wasn’t reported until it was making the rounds on social media Saturday as head coach Josh Heupel was spotted in the stands next to the elite 2023 recruit.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder out of the IMG Academy is from the Chicago originally and recently released a top five that included Tennessee football, Ohio State, Georgia, Notre Dame, and Alabama but now has an official visit set for LSU.

Tate, who is ranked 38th overall in the 2023 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings, has already received a pair of crystal ball projections to Ohio State. Yet, Tennessee has been trending up and a bring reason for that is the five-star quarterback already committed in 2023 to the Vols, Nico Iamaleava.

Iamaleava was the biggest recruiting win for the Vols in a long time and the five-star QB was on campus this weekend too, which is why getting Tate for a second visit in less than a month is such a big deal for Tennessee.

Can Tennessee football land another five-star?

The Vols have nine total commitments in 2023 and are starting to recruit like an SEC power once again as they have the No. 4 overall class according to the On3.com team rankings.

More impressively, Tennessee has three pledges in the top 100 and according to the On3.com prediction machine, the Vols have a 60-percent chance to win out for Tate is ranked 16th overall in the 2023 class and third among wide receivers via On3’s rankings.

Chad Simmons, the lead analyst for On3.com put in a projection for Tennessee and that followed three other expert picks for Ohio State. Steve Wiltfong the top national analyst for 247 sports still has his crystal ball in for Ohio State.

Yet, with a five-star QB in the class in the fold and some major momentum on the trail, Tennessee feels like the team to beat and that’s some impressive work by head coach Josh Heupel.
