Fresh off a terrible season in 2022, Northwestern football has built tons of recruiting momentum in 2023 and has a top-10 class so far.

If you look through the college football team recruiting rankings for the 2023 class, you’ll see a surprise team in the top 10, at least according to the 247 sports composite rankings and that’s the Northwestern football team.

The Wildcats have the seventh-ranked class right now in the 2023 class via the 247 composite rankings and they are ranked third among Big Ten programs right now, which isn’t what you would expect after last season’s 3-9 record.

Michigan went 12-2 last season and reached the College Football Playoff. However, the Wolverines and Michigan State are behind Northwestern right now in the team rankings after the Wildcats got their 15th commitment from three-star defensive end, Mason Robinson.

Robinson is the latest pledge for Pat Fitzgerald and the Wildcats in 2023 and he’s also the highest-ranked commitment at No. 409 overall according to the 247 sports composite rankings.

Penn State was one of the programs in the mix for Robinson, who is out of Owing Mills, Maryland, and is ranked 53rd among defensive ends and eighth in the state.

Detractors will look at the Wildcats’ 15 verbal commitments and correctly point out that there isn’t a four-star recruit among the bunch. However, they are all ranked in the top 1,000 and it shows that one down year isn’t going to dull the momentum of Fitzgerald and the Cats.

It was less than two years ago that Northwestern football went to the Big Ten championship game after winning the Big Ten West.

The expectations were high last season but after the quarterbacks struggled and the defense took a step back, Northwestern saw one of its best players transfer in the offseason as Brandon Joseph went to Notre Dame.

Still, this is a good sign for Fitzgerald, who has been counted out again and again. So doubt Northwestern at your own risk. The Wildcats aren’t on the level of Michigan or Ohio State, but they know what kind of players they need to be successful and the 2023 class, so far, has been a home run in that regard.
