Missouri football found an experienced quarterback in the transfer portal in former Southern Miss and Mississippi State quarterback Jack Abraham.

The pursuit of an experienced quarterback has led Missouri football coach Eli Drinkwitz, like many coaches in today’s game, down the road of the transfer portal. After being spurned on three separate occasions, Drinkwitz and the Missouri Tigers may have finally found their guy.

After taking a visit around the Missouri campus, former Southern Miss and Mississippi State quarterback Jack Abraham committed to the Tigers for the 2022 season.

Abraham initially began at Louisiana Tech, where he redshirted his freshman year. After transferring to Northwest Mississippi Community College, Abraham found his way to Southern Miss. A three-year starter at Southern Miss, Abraham decided to transfer to Mississippi State in 2021 for his senior season. After suffering a concussion in the summer and dealing with subsequent post-concussion symptoms, he was sidelined for the season. With the emergence of Will Rogers under Mike Leach’s “Air Raid” offense, Abraham decided to move on without ever playing a single snap for the Bulldogs.

Former Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels considered Missouri before deciding to make the move to Baton Rouge to play at LSU for new head coach Brian Kelly. Daniels, a three-year starter at Arizona State, was named 2019 Sun Bowl MVP as a freshman. Despite a statistical regression since his freshman year, Daniels would have provided the dual-threat along with the experience that is missing from the Missouri roster.

Earlier in the spring, former USC and Georgia quarterback JT Daniels took a visit to Columbia and was in attendance for the Missouri spring game. And like Jayden Daniels, JT decided that his future would yet again be at a different school, transferring to West Virginia. Daniels started seven games over two seasons for the Bulldogs before losing out to Stetson Bennett as Georgia went on to claim the national title in 2021.

Ex-Baylor quarterback Gerry Bohanon found a new home outside of Columbia as well. Despite starting 12 games last season in which the Bears went 10-2 including a victory in the Sugar Bowl, Bohanon entered the spring in a battle for the starting quarterback position with sophomore Blake Shapen. The latter started two games in place of the injured Bohanon, including a victory in the Big 12 title game over the favored Oklahoma State Cowboys. After Dave Aranda named Shapen the new starter, Bohanon decided to enter the transfer portal. After considering Missouri amongst several other schools during his search, he decided to take his talents to South Florida where he’ll have two more years of eligibility.

Abraham commits to the program as a walk-on transfer with the chance to earn a scholarship. While returning redshirt sophomore Brady Cook and redshirt freshman Tyler Macon are still in the competition for the starting job, Abraham offers the experience lost with the transfer of two-year starter Connor Bazelak to Indiana. The 2022 season will be Abraham’s seventh year of eligibility.
