5. 2006

Head coach: Rich Rodriguez
Record: 11-2

The Mountaineers were the fifth-ranked team in the nation heading into their 2006 season. I was nine, and the second-fastest guy in elementary school, everything was idyllic and I didn’t know how incredible it was to be a WVU fan just yet. But, I digress.

WVU started the season by destroying little brother Marshall (duh) and winning seven straight games before falling to Louisville. Pat White and Steve Slaton — ever heard of them? — continued their dynamic dominance from the prior year and helped WVU finish the season with an 11-2 record.

The 2006 team would end up beating the Calvin Johnson-led Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 38-35 in the Gator Bowl. The win in the Gator Bowl would get the Mountaineers ranked 10th in the AP poll, which would give them their sixth ever top 10 ranking at the season’s end.

I would fall to my knees and rejoice if we had a year like that this year.
