Louisville football has been on a roll lately on the recruiting trail and on Monday, the Cardinal stunned the college football world by landing Rueben Owens.

The Louisville football program has had plenty of success over the years, but the Cardinals have never been known for landing five-star recruits or anything of the sort.

In fact, according to the 247 sports composite rankings, Louisville football has only ever signed one five-star recruit in the history of the program and that was running back Michael Bush.

Yet, Louisville has been killing it on the recruiting trail this spring and that trend continued Monday as the Cardinals shocked the college football recruiting landscape by getting the commitment of five-star running back Rueben Owens.

Owens is out of El Campo, Texas and the 5-foot-11, 190-pounder is ranked as the No. 1 running back in the 2023 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings, as well as the No. 16 prospect overall.

Bush ranked slightly higher back then (11th overall) and he was out of Louisville, Kentucky,  so that was obviously an easier pull than Owens, who had Texas, Texas A&M, and TCU hot on his trail.

The Longhorns were considered the favorite at one time, yet the Aggies seemed to have pulled in front after a recent unofficial visit. He also visited Michigan State this month unofficially and Jackson State on an official visit.

However, this past weekend, he was in Louisville and the Cardinals must have wowed him because Owens is now part of their 2023 haul which features 10 commitments. Owens is the second ranked in the top 100 as DeAndre Moore Jr. the No. 56 overall prospect and 10th-ranked wide receiver in 2023 committed to Louisville last month.

The Cardinals have five blue-chip commitments (four-star or better) so far in the 2023 class and they ranked 11th overall in the rankings after adding Owens, who rushed for 2, 989 yards and 46 touchdowns last season. He has 76 total touchdowns in three high school seasons.

There’s no doubt that Owens will be fun to watch, but few expected Louisville football to land him and you have to give Scott Satterfield all the credit in the world because he just landed one of the top commitments in program history.
