After landing a second five-star wide receiver in as many days, Ohio State football has overtaken Notre Dame for the top recruiting class in 2023.

Notre Dame football has put together an impressive 2023 recruiting class. The Irish have 15 total commitments and 13 of those are “blue-chip” prospects.

A blue-chip is a player rated as a four or five-star recruit. And if you have never read it, Bud Elliott puts out a blue-chip ratio and essentially you need to be at about 50 percent or better in terms of your commitments being blue chips to have a shot at winning a national title.

In the 2023 class, Notre Dame football currently has an 86-percent blue-chip ratio and is ranked No. 1 according to the 247 sports team rankings.

However, Ohio State football is gaining. In fact, according to On3.com, the Buckeyes now have the No. 1 class in 2023 after landing five-star wideouts Brandon Inniss and Carnell Tate in consecutive days, which is one of the more impressive hauls in recent recruiting memory.

Ohio State football has always attracted highly-talented wide receivers but after last season’s incredible passing campaign, the Buckeyes have landed their first five-star wideout since 2019 and got two in as many days.

Ohio State football has 2023’s best class right now

Even though Ohio State football has just 12 commitments, 11 of them are ranked as four-star recruits or better, and none of those 11 ranks are lower than No. 270 overall in the 247 composite rankings. Even the lowest commitment is in the top 500.

On3 does their team rankings a little bit different so while Notre Dame football is still in the top spot via 247 sports, On3 puts more emphasis on the average rating of commitments and in that category, Ohio State football has Notre Dame beat.

The Irish have a five-star of their own in Keon Keeley as well as four top-100 commitments overall. Yet, Ohio State has more high-end talent and as the recruiting class gets closer to National Signing Day, it’s looking like the Buckeyes could have a legit shot at the No. 1 ranking.

At least a better shot than Notre Dame football, unless the Irish are able to land Dante Moore but that seems like a longshot now with CJ Carr in the fold for 2024.

Georgia and Alabama are also going to be in the mix. Both programs just landed top-200 commitments this week, while Clemson has 11 blue-chips and Penn State has nine and each just landed four-star recruits on Tuesday.
