Texas football could be making a run at the top-ranked recruiting class in 2023 and made another big move on Wednesday by adding 5-star WR Johntay Cook.

The Longhorns are on a crazy recruiting run right now and on Wednesday, Texas football added its third five-star commitment in the past week.

Yes, you read that right. Texas has won the commitments of three five-star recruits in the 2023 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings, within the past week and that number is currently No. 1 among all teams in the 2023 class.

Texas football also has the No. 2 class currently according to the 247 sports team composite rankings for 2023. Ohio State, which has two five-star commitments is sitting just ahead of Texas, while Notre Dame, which has one, is third. Clemson is also fourth after landing its 12th commitment in the month of June.

While that’s impressive, what Texas has done is even better.

The Longhorns have just as many total commitments this month (12) as Clemson but Arch Manning is the No. 1 overall prospect in 2023 and Johntay Cook, he’s ranked 36th overall. Five-star safety Derek Williams is 37th.

Texas has 17 total pledges for the 2023 class, which is three more than Ohio State and two more than Notre Dame. Yet, the Longhorns are far from finished.

Can Texas take over No. 1?

Five-star linebacker Anthony Hill, the top-ranked LB in the country and No. 14 recruit overall according to the 247 sports composite rankings is down to Texas and Texas A&M. The Aggies are the favorite according to crystal ball projections but you can’t count out the Horns.

Texas football is also projected to land top-50 running Cedric Baxter, as well as Jalen Hale, who is ranked as the 14th-best player in the state of Texas and 76th overall via the On3 consensus.

The Longhorns have an 80-percent chance to win his commitment and since Manning committed last Thursday, Texas has been on fire when it comes to college football recruiting.

And it doesn’t look like Texas will be cooling off anytime soon.

However, landing the No. 1 class will mean getting more of those blue-chip prospects to commit, which is a lot easier when Manning is going to be the QB.

For now, Texas is sitting in the top five, with the top prize in its basket. Who would have thought that after a 5-7 season?
