Five-star wide receiver recruit, and recent Texas commit, revealed some troubling information about Michigan football’s recruiting.

What a weird year it’s been for Michigan football.

About six months ago, Jim Harbaugh was hoisting the Big Ten title trophy after smashing Iowa in the conference championship game. The Wolverines were then dismantled by Georgia in the playoff and Jim Harbaugh spent weeks flirting with the NFL.

Michigan fans hoped that he’d decide to return and whether he truly wanted to or not, he did.

Fast forward to June and Michigan has one of the worst recruiting classes in the entire Big Ten after losing top commit Raylen Wilson and Harbaugh is catching a ton of flak for his lack of urgency in the 2023 class.

On Wednesday, one of Michigan’s top targets, five-star wideout Johntay Cook, committed to Texas and spoke highly of the relationships he built in Austin. A video was posted on Twitter of him talking about Oregon and Michigan as well during the process and he was brutally honest about the Wolverines’ recruiting approach. Hint: it’s not good.

Cook said that Michigan just gave the same old pitch that every staff really does and the Wolverines didn’t do a great job of building relationships. If you’re a Michigan fan, that has to worry the heck out of you.

If Harbaugh’s recruiting pitch is stale and used and he’s not utilizing the NIL approach, that has to mean that Michigan is just going to fall behind.

It’s already happening as the Wolverines are ranked No. 55 nationally and 13th in the Big Ten in the 2023 recruiting class rankings, but there could soon be a flurry of July pledges. If there’s not, there’s reason to smash that panic button.

Cook’s words should be taken to heart by the staff and worked on immediately.
