Akron football has won three games over three seasons. New head coach Joe Moorhead brings new life to the Zips. How quickly can he turn optimism into wins?

Akron football has never been known as a football powerhouse. The Zips have really hit rock bottom the last three seasons, going 3-27 under head coach Tom Arth. Now a new era begins under new head coach Joe Moorhead.

In their 30 years as a member of the MAC, the Zips have one conference title in 2005. Moorhead was the quarterbacks’ coach from 2004-2006 before his stint as offensive coordinator for the 2007 and 2008 seasons. After stints as the OC at Penn State and Oregon and head coach at Fordham and Mississippi State, Moorhead returns to Akron in hopes of turning around their fortunes.

The Zips are an experienced team with eight returning starters on each side of the ball. However, they will need to make vast improvements. The Zips were one of the worst defenses in college football a year ago yet there are some key transfers looking to help shore up this side of the ball.

A new head coach and staff certainly bring optimism. Moorhead has the experience and capability to get Akron football moving in the right direction. Let’s take a look at how this year’s team looks on both sides of the ball.
