New Mexico State football finished 2-10. Can new head coach Jerry Kill lead the Aggies to a better record?
In the “What is the worst FBS football program?” discussion, New Mexico State is in that conversation and has been for some time. Former head coach Doug Martin could muster just one winning season in nine years but did lead the Aggies to their first bowl win since 1960.
Outside of 2017, New Mexico State lost 10 or more games four times and had three nine-loss seasons during Martin’s nine-year tenure. Enter veteran head coach Jerry Kill.
Kill has won in somewhat out-of-the-way schools. It was Kill who began winning in both Northern Illinois and Minnesota. Who knows where Kill would be coaching if it had not been for a sudden retirement due to epilepsy. That fact should give New Mexico State football fans some hope.
New Mexico State joining Conference USA was a wise move. The Aggies get a much-needed financial bump playing in a conference rather than as an independent.
Kill does have quite the uphill climb in Las Cruces. The roster sorely needs talent and depth, and Kill will have to do so with high school players with only six players signed via the transfer portal. There is hope and the possibility of good times ahead.
Here is a closer look at New Mexico State’s offense, defense, and schedule.
