New Mexico football finished 3-9 last season and 1-7 in the MWC. What improvements need to be made for New Mexico to be better this fall?
Exactly 131 teams play FBS football; the New Mexico Lobos were 130th in the country in scoring offense. The Lobos scored 12.2 points per game last season. The season did get off to a promising start, however. New Mexico scored 51 points in their first two games against Houston Baptist and New Mexico State.
The Lobos would take six games to score 51 points, including being shut out by Texas A&M and scoring seven points against San Diego State and Colorado State. The Lobos scored a meager 85 points the rest of the season. New Mexico scored ten or fewer points six times, three of those shutouts.
The defense was not as bad. The lopsided scores were an effect of the offense’s inability to move the football and leaving the defense on the field for far more snaps than most of the offense.
Is there any hope for the Lobos this season?
The short answer is yes. It depends on how the Lobos decide to measure success. The offense cannot possibly be as bad as last season, and the defense brings back many starters from last year.
