My No. 2 Notre Dame breakout candidate (Tyler Buchner) is going to need someone other than Michael Mayer to throw to and that’s where my No. 1 candidate comes into play.

Lorenzo Styles was one of the best receiver recruits in the entire 2021 class, ranking 20th at the position and he was the No. 115 overall recruit in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite. He held some impressive offers and the Ohio native ultimately picked Notre Dame where he had a decent freshman year with 24 catches for 344 yards and a touchdown.

He has barely scratched the surface.

Sliding into a prominent role as a projected starter, I believe Styles has what it takes to be Notre Dame’s No. 1 receiver this season and a potential 1,000-yard candidate.

Styles has good size and plus athleticism and he’s only getting better as he gets older. And now, he’s developing a solid rapport with Buchner as they came in together in the 2021 class.

Expect the Buchner-to-Styles connection to be alive and well in 2022 and potentially lead the Irish offense for years to come.
