BYU football had a strong 2021 season with a 10-3 finish and Kalani Sitake is hoping these guys step up to build on that momentum.

After going 10-3 in the first season post-Zach Wilson, BYU football coach Kalani Sitake became one of the most sought-after names in the coaching carousel. It was even rumored that Oregon was interested in poaching him after Mario Cristobal left for Miami.

Sitake stayed put which was the best news BYU fans could hope for and it feels like the Cougars are going to be one of the best non-Power Five teams in college football again.

If BYU wants to push for a New Year’s Six berth, it’ll need some guys to step up and have breakout seasons like Wilson did a couple of years ago.

Who are the top breakout candidates?

Speaking of Oregon, Kingsley Suamataia was the Ducks’ top signee in the 2021 class before deciding to enter the transfer portal and head back home to Utah to play for BYU.

The former five-star offensive tackle is eligible to play this season and he’s already projected to start at right tackle for the Cougars with Blake Freeland back as starter at left tackle.

If there’s one newcomer who I believe is going to break out and make a name for himself this season, it would have to be Suamataia. He has the talent and potential to be one of the best tackles in college football and if he remained at Oregon, he’d be a legitimate All-Pac-12 selection this coming season.

I have high hopes for Suamataia at BYU.
