Georgia football just gave head coach Kirby Smart a massive new deal but in the long run, the Bulldogs will be glad that they did.

Some moves make too much sense not to make and making Georgia football’s Kirby Smart the highest-paid head coach in college football was one of them.

Since Smart arrived in Georgia, he has transformed the Bulldogs into a national power. Georgia was already one of the best programs in the SEC, year in and year out, but now the Bulldogs are right on par with Nick Saban and Alabama, especially after beating the Crimson Tide for the national championship after the 2021 season.

The Bulldogs are 66-15 with Smart as the head coach and while he hasn’t won an SEC championship and a national championship in the same season, he has won both championships winning the SEC in 2017 and the natty in 2021.

Smart’s biggest obstacle seemed to be beating Nick Saban and the Tide. Alabama has beaten Georgia numerous times in the SEC championship game, including last season.

But Smart finally got his revenge last January and with the way that Georgia is recruiting, the Bulldogs are here to stay among college football’s elites, particularly now that Smart is locked up for the next decade.

The big money will be worth it

The last offseason showed the going rate for elite college football head coaches and Smart is right there with Saban in terms of being the best. Lincoln Riley, Brian Kelly, and Mel Tucker (who had interest from LSU) are all making over $9 million a year and each ranks in the top seven of salaries according to Sportsnaut.

None of them have won a playoff game or a national championship. So it makes Smart’s deal seem like a bargain and that will be even more true in a couple of years.

The $11 million a year salary is a little eye-opening but I guarantee you not a single Georgia football fan worried about that for a second.

Bulldog fans just have to be celebrating that Smart doesn’t appear to be going anywhere for a very, very long time.
