Jim Harbaugh was asked about Michigan’s soft scheduling over the next couple of years and he gave a weird, awkward response.

In true Jim Harbaugh fashion, Big Ten Media Days are his time to shine and give his usual weird answers to questions that have everyone talking — and scratching their heads at the same time.

You have to give him credit, though: he knows how to get people talking about him and his program.

This year, however, his program is in the spotlight more than ever thanks to being the reigning Big Ten champs. He finally got the Wolverines over the hump, beating Ohio State for the first time since becoming Michigan’s head coach and winning the school’s first conference title since 2004.

And yet the reigning Big Ten champs have one of the easiest schedules in college football with UConn, Hawaii, and Colorado State visiting in non-conference play. Some might call that type of cupcake scheduling unacceptable but Harbaugh doesn’t seem to have paid much mind to it.

He was asked if the program plans on scheduling more Power Five teams in the future and he responded as awkwardly as you could imagine.

Harbaugh responded with a simple “I don’t know” followed by what seemed like an eternity of awkward silence and a shrug. He continued by stating that he has no idea if the program will schedule more Power Five non-conference teams like the rest of the Big Ten — and country — does. He didn’t seem too worried about it.

I get it, he relies on the athletic director to schedule these non-conference Power Five teams and Michigan has just avoided it. He can give his input on the non-conference opponents, but maybe he just don’t worry about that enough.

But if it comes down to it and Michigan and another team are vying for that last playoff spot, that cupcake non-conference schedule is going to be an issue.

Harbaugh should want to face some of the best teams to get more eyes on his program in the non-conference and the fact that he “doesn’t know” if he plans on doing so is just odd.
