After a solid 2021 season, BYU football is hoping for similar luck in 2022. Will the schedule stand in the way of New Year’s Six contention?

BYU football fans were glad to see that their beloved head coach, Kalani Sitake, was staying put in Provo in 2022 after being rumored as a candidate for the Oregon job following the departure of Mario Cristobal.

Those rumors quickly subsided as the Ducks hired Dan Lanning from Georgia but it just goes to show how valuable Sitake is as a head coach.

Winning 10-plus games consistently at BYU is a significant achievement.

Can Sitake and the Cougars break that 10-win threshold again in 2022? Let’s rank BYU’s opponents by toughness.

Honestly, this one was a no-brainer. Utah Tech — a school that I honestly didn’t even know existed — went 1-10 in the FCS last year and wasn’t very competitive in any of their losses. It’s safe to say that this team isn’t going to cause many problems for the Cougars in late November. This one should be over by halftime.

Surprisingly not last in these toughness rankings, USF probably would have been at No. 12 if there was another team not named Utah Tech on the Cougars’ schedule.

The Bulls were 2-10 last season and have won just three games over two years since Jeff Scott took over and I don’t see a ton of improvement coming. The offense should improve but I’m not going to even question this team as a threat to BYU to begin the season even if it is in Tampa.
