Big names get big commitments

Don’t look now but Brian Kelly and the LSU Tigers have a top-10 college football recruiting class in 2023 and it’s one that features two elite wide receivers.

Jalen Brown is a five-star according to some recruiting services and is 41st overall in the 247 sports composite rankings. Getting him out of Miami was a big win but so was getting the commitment of five-star Shelton Sampson Jr. this weekend.

Sampson is the five recruit ranked in the top 102 for the Tigers and most of those have pledged this summer. He’s also out of Baton Rouge which can’t hurt in the effort for Collins.

All in all, Kelly is putting together exactly the kind of recruiting class he’ll need in order for LSU to compete in the SEC, especially as Texas and Oklahoma join.

Speaking of Texas, its run of success on the recruiting trail continued with the pledge of four-star defensive end Derion Gullette, who is ranked 149th overall (via 247 composite rankings). His commitment gives Texas 15 blue chips out of 21 and six in the top 150, as well as putting the Longhorns fifth overall in the 2023 class.

Last but not least, Michigan scored a big commitment back on August 1st. It was Evan Link out of Washington, D.C. On3 has him rated near the top 100 and it’s big for Michigan because he was viewed as a Penn State lean before a visit to Ann Arbor last weekend.

The fact that Michigan beat out a rival, shows that maybe all the concern about the Wolverines’ recruiting was a little overblown. The class still isn’t what you’d expect after a playoff berth but it still has the makings of a top 15 class.
