Notre Dame football has high expectations for the 2022 season, but will the Irish contend for the College Football Playoff again?

Brian Kelly caused a massive shake-up of the Notre Dame football program last November, accepting the vacant head coaching job at LSU.

No one really saw this move coming because Notre Dame is already a prestigious job and Kelly led the Irish to multiple College Football Playoffs. But he felt like he could actually get over that hump and win a national title at LSU like Ed Orgeron, Nick Saban, and Les Miles had all done.

Now, Marcus Freeman is in charge of the Irish after just one season as defensive coordinator. He’ll have a talented team returning in 2022 to help him get to the promised land, but will he experience growing pains?

Here are some bold predictions for the Irish ahead of the 2022 season.

3. Michael Mayer wins the Mackey Award

Everyone is on the Brock Bowers bandwagon after he led the national champion Georgia Bulldogs in receiving with 56 catches for 882 yards and 13 touchdowns but I’m buying Michael Mayer stock.

I do believe Bowers is up there as one of the best tight ends in the country and very well may be the most talented, but people are sleeping on Mayer after he put up similar numbers with the Irish in 2021, catching 71 passes for 840 yards and seven touchdowns.

Mayer is going to be the next Notre Dame tight end great and he’ll end up winning the Mackey Award in 2022.
