Big Ten play begins for Minnesota with a tough road matchup.

Week 4 @ Michigan State Spartans Sept. 24 East Lansing, MI

Week 4 sends the Gophers on the road to face Michigan State. Michigan State will be coming off a physical game at Washington, whereas the Gophers will be coming in fresh due to a light non-conference play. The key will be weathering the first quarter and keeping the game close, which is what the Gophers are built to do. The Spartans are due for a letdown this year after having everything go their way a season ago and I expect the Gophers to survive the first test of the season despite being slight road dogs. The Gophers survive, 24-21.

Prediction: Win (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten)

Week 5 Purdue Boilermakers Oct. 1 Minneapolis, MN

Purdue comes into Minneapolis after playing a stretch of three non-conference games and based on Gopher history this has the feel of a game where they lay an egg and blow an opportunity to really establish themselves atop the standings. It will be close but in a tight spot Morgan will come up short and the Gophers will stumble, losing 38-36 heading into their Week 6 bye.

Prediction: Loss (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten)
