Dana Holgorsen left West Virginia for the Houston job three years ago and I think everyone believed he was crazy. Why would he leave a Power Five job at a solid Big 12 school for a Group of Five opening where he would face an uphill battle? Clearly, he saw the vision.

Three years later, following a 19-15 start to his Houston career, Holgorsen has a team destined for greatness in the AAC. He’s coming off a 12-win season in 2021 and he could easily be coaching this year’s Cincinnati. He could lead the Cougars to an unbeaten regular-season record in the AAC and potentially push for a playoff spot.

Houston brings back Clayton Tune at quarterback after he passed for over 3,500 yards and 30 touchdowns to the nation’s No. 23 passing offense, but losing Alton McCaskill IV to an ACL injury in the spring is going to hurt the run game. Still, this offense should be explosive.

Defensively, Houston was one of the nation’s best teams and that should continue in 2022 with six starters back.

If Houston can sneak by Texas Tech in Week 2 and SMU on Nov. 5, I think the Cougars will be 12-0 before the postseason starts with a legit shot at a playoff spot.
