Houston is the Group of Five team with the best chance to go undefeated and Utah, in my opinion, is the top Power Five surprise candidate to go unbeaten.

The Utes went just 10-4 last year, but that was after a 1-2 start in which they didn’t have their starting quarterback decided upon. Charlie Brewer came over from Baylor and he didn’t pan out and was holding the offense back and when Cameron Rising came in to replace him, the team looked completely different.

After a 1-2 start, Utah went 8-1 throughout the rest of the regular season, beating Oregon twice in commanding fashion to win the Pac-12 title and finally clinch a Rose Bowl appearance. Through one half, it looked like Utah was going to down a really good Ohio State team, but the Buckeyes stormed back and beat the Utes 48-45. That’s still a good sign that this team is going to contend.

Utah brings back Rising, 1,000-yard rusher Tavion Thomas, and four of the top five receivers from a year ago on offense while the defense brings back five starters to the No. 27 unit from 2021.

If Utah can sneak by Florida in The Swamp in the opener and beat USC in the middle of the year, I think it can sneak by Oregon on the road again and head into the Pac-12 title game 12-0.
