Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian trolled fans a little bit this week by letting Hudson Card rumors circulate before naming Quinn Ewers the starter.

Texas football fans were in absolute shambles on Thursday into Friday afternoon as rumors swirled that former No. 1 overall recruit Quinn Ewers had lost the quarterback battle to Hudson Card, a former top-100 recruit in his own regard.

Ewers transferred graduated high school early to enroll at Ohio State last year and he realized that his path to playing time would be tough with Heisman-caliber quarterback CJ Stroud leading the way. He entered the portal and chose Texas so he could move back home and play for the program he probably grew up idolizing.

But on Thursday, it was sounding like he lost the starting quarterback battle to Card who isn’t exactly a slouch. Fans were having complete meltdowns and the once-boisterous “we’re so back” crowd cowered into a somber “here we go again” crowd.

And the rumors carried over into Friday until Steve Sarkisian spoke about the battle and officially named Ewers the team’s starting quarterback.

Fans were climbing back off the ledge in droves as the worst fear was avoided and Ewers was good enough to beat the quarterback that couldn’t beat out Casey Thompson last year.

You have to feel for Card because he’s a former top-75 recruit who was expecting to play for his home-state Longhorns after Sam Ehlinger and he hasn’t quite panned out. I wouldn’t be shocked if he entered the transfer portal after this news.

Ewers fans can rest easy, however, as it looks like he’ll avoid being the next Tate Martell — for now, at least.
