Scott Frost was brought in to turn Nebraska football around but he has done more harm than good with the Cornhuskers in the Big Ten’s basement.

Up 28-17 in the third quarter, Nebraska football looked like it was just going to run away with a season-opening win over Northwestern in Ireland.

And then Nebraska went full Nebraska.

The Cornhuskers surrendered 14 straight points and got the ball back at their own 3-yard-line with just over two minutes left to try and end the nightmare. It didn’t work.

Casey Thompson had himself a heck of a game outside of two crucial interceptions in the second half but it was his defense that let him down.

And possibly his head coach, Scott Frost.

Coming into the game, Frost had a 15-29 overall record at Nebraska and although he was coming off a 3-9 season last year, his team was a hot pick to win the Big Ten West. They still could win the division, but after losing to a mediocre Northwestern team, I just don’t see that happening and the Frost era should come to an abrupt end after this game.

This was a game that everyone expected him to win. He had the benefit of playing in a near-home game atmosphere with a huge crowd from Lincoln traveling to the game. Northwestern was also coming off a 3-9 season and didn’t have the same caliber of talent on the roster heading into this year. But that didn’t matter as Pat Fitzgerald out-classed Frost in front of an international audience.

Frost was brought to Nebraska to be the savior of the program he won a national title with as a player and he was welcomed in with open arms, but it just hasn’t worked. He’s now 15-30 in four-plus seasons with yet another giveaway loss in which he handed the other team a win. Frost continues to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Nebraska fans deserve better. They’re loyal to a fault, but they’re invested in a program that continues to let them down.

Hiring Frost was a good idea at the time, but he shouldn’t have even made it this far. It was fairly evident after the first couple of seasons that he just wasn’t the guy the program needed.

And Saturday’s Week 0 opener was just further proof.

It’s time for Nebraska to move on and end the Frost experiment.
