Ranking college football’s top 25 head coaches for 2022
Brian Kelly has had one heck of a coaching career to this point and he is a national champion two times over — at the Division II level. He went 118-35-2 with Grand Valley State in Division II before moving over to one of the state’s FBS programs, Central Michigan.
Kelly went 19-16 with the Chippewas and then took over for Mark Dantonio at Cincinnati after he left for Michigan State. Like Dantonio, Kelly used the Bearcat program as a stepping stone, going 34-6 in three-plus seasons before Notre Dame poached him in 2010.
Everyone thought of Kelly when Notre Dame was mentioned and he went 92-39 with the Irish with a couple of playoff appearances and a national title loss back in 2012 — but the 2012 and 2013 seasons were both vacated. He won 10-plus games in the past five seasons with the Irish before deciding to bolt for LSU.
Why would he leave Notre Dame for LSU? He felt like the ceiling of the program is much higher in Baton Rouge than South Bend which may be right because the Tigers have numerous national titles since 2000 and the Irish have zero in that span.
Kelly can recruit and he’s proven to be a really good coach, but will the LSU job eat him up?
