The Spartans host the Broncos from the MAC for both teams’ season opener. Michigan State is a heavy favorite as Western Michigan had some of their top playmakers graduate or go to the NFL this offseason. The Spartans will not have Kenneth Walker III, Jalen Nailor, and Connor Heyward who are all playing in the NFL this season as well as key contributors like Matt Coghlin and Jacob Panasiuk but they brought back a good amount of their team from last season.

Western Michigan had an outstanding non-conference road victory against Pitt last year but finished in a three-way tie for last place in the MAC West last year. However, the Broncos won at Northern Illinois to end the regular season and defeated Nevada in the Quick Lane bowl. Western Michigan should have one of the top defenses in the MAC this season but their offense lost some key playmakers and time will tell how well the Broncos play this year.

This in-state game is one of the most anticipated non-conference games in the state of Michigan this year and was originally going to be broadcasted on ESPN’s main channel but was moved to ESPN 2 due to the Serena Williams U.S. Open tennis match. However, even though the line for this game is strongly in favor of the Spartans, the Broncos will look to pull off the upset in East Lansing.

The storylines for this game will be apparent as for example, Michigan State’s starting quarterback Payton Thorne will go against his father who is the new offensive coordinator at Western Michigan.

Another storyline for this game: will the Spartans be able to replace Walker’s production from last season? Regardless of the storylines and commentary by the broadcasters for this game, the first game of the season will more than likely present each of the fanbases with the answers to questions that they have had since the spring games and up until preseason camp.

This game more than likely will be a Michigan State victory with a score of 44-20 for example, but you can’t rule out a potential upset by the Broncos as they proved last year that they are capable of defeating a power five team on the road.
