A night free of upsets

College football is usually rife with upsets and during the first week of the season, we almost always see at least one FCS team knock off an FBS team.

We almost saw it a few times last night, the first Thursday of the 2022 college football season but all the upsets were avoided.

San Jose State narrowly defeated Portland State, as some late turnovers by the Vikings, allowed the Spartans to win 21-17 on their home field. Northern Illinois beat Eastern Illinois 34-27 and Akron had to go to overtime to defeat St. Francis (PA). Florida International also defeated Bryant, another FCS program, by one, 38-37.

FIU rallied from 16-6 down in the fourth quarter and won in overtime on a two-point conversion. Grayson James threw four touchdowns including the game-tying score and the two-point play.

Tennessee and Wake Forest, two other top teams in action, won with ease so all in all, Thursday night of Week 1 was uneventful, at least in terms of upsets.
