SEC Football: Best games week-by-week in the 2022 season
By Shelbie Warr
Week 2: Alabama at Texas
This is the game that everyone and their mama are waiting for; unless of course you’re an Aggie and you’re just waiting for the Longhorns to get pummeled to make up for the boring game that you are set up for that afternoon. From what I know about the Longhorns and their recent history, this should be an easy game for Alabama.
Texas isn’t “back” as of yet and this game won’t change that as they won’t be coming out victorious — at least I don’t think they will. They’ve got a million-dollar quarterback in Quinn Ewers — a transfer from Ohio State who has yet to play a snap — while Alabama has a proven, Heisman-winning quarterback in Bryce Young with a championship-shaped chip on his shoulder.
Let’s be honest, who would you really pick?
Honorable Mention: Kentucky at Florida
This game wasn’t anything competitive for years, but in the last couple of seasons, things have changed dramatically. Florida isn’t what it used to be and neither is Kentucky, something that is good for one and not so good for the other. Now this game will be settled in Week 2 and we will know more about what to expect from the Gators this season, though I am not sure this will be a measuring stick for Kentucky if Florida proves to be not so great.
Week 3: Penn State at Auburn
Penn State has been pretty good as of late and Auburn is, well, Auburn is Auburn. They are either really good or really bad and that changes weekly. Now, they have TJ Finley and Zach Calzada battling for a starting position, and honestly, I’m not sure who the better choice is. I’ve got this as a loss for the Tigers and I don’t believe it’ll be close. I haven’t bought into the Auburn hype, even though they have Tank Bigsby at running back and that kid is the real deal. I’m sorry Tiger faithful, but this one goes to the Nittany Lions after two easy wins to start your season.
Honorable Mention: Miami at Texas A&M
I was between this game and the Mississippi State and LSU showdown, but I decided to stick with the non-conference game for Week 3 as I think this game has the chance to be season-defining for the Aggies. If they can’t put together a complete game versus the ‘Canes they don’t have a hope and a prayer of making it through their SEC schedule alive. If they can though, this could be a 10 or even 11-win season for the Aggies.
