UTSA and Houston football played an overtime thriller in one of the best games of Week 1. What’d we learn from this one?

Head coach Jeff Traylor has to love the heart the UTSA Roadrunners played with in this game. In addition, Frank Harris made two of the best throws you’ll see all season to get this game into overtime. Harris first completed a pass to Joshua Cephus, then to Oscar Cardenas to set up a 37-yard field goal to force overtime.

Both teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime. Both teams traded touchdowns and 2-point conversions in the second overtime. It was Houston quarterback Clayton Tune scoring the game-clinching conversion. Harris and the Roadrunners could not convert in its subsequent possession.

Here are three takeaways from this afternoon’s game.

3. Houston didn’t have a bad game despite playing from behind

Cougars head coach Dana Holgersen has to be excited about how well his quarterback played in this game. Veteran quarterback Clayton Tune led the Cougars in passing and rushing, throwing for 206 yards and three touchdowns, chipping in 51 rushing yards, a touchdown, and the game-winning two-point conversion.

Defensively, the Cougars were solid most of the game, especially against the run. Take away quarterback Frank Harris’ 63 rush yards; the Roadrunners had just 41 rush yards on 22 carries.

Houston’s defensive line, known as “Sack Avenue,” had three sacks.
