College Football 2022: 5 piping-hot takes from Week 1
1. The Big Ten doesn’t currently have a playoff-worthy team
As a Big Ten football fan, this pains me to say.
After one week of play, the Big Ten doesn’t currently have a playoff-caliber team. That’s not to say the conference won’t have one by the end of the season, but no one really looked like it was worthy of a spot in the national semifinal after the openers.
Ohio State hosted No. 5 Notre Dame in a top-five matchup and while the Buckeyes won 21-10, they didn’t really impress anyone. They were expected to win big and had a clear talent advantage, but there just wasn’t that ‘wow’ factor with the Buckeyes this year compared to last year. I think the Buckeyes will get better, but if they’re the No. 3 team after last week, the national title may be a two-team race.
Michigan won handily against Colorado State which wasn’t shocking but there seems to be a bigger issue: the quarterback controversy. Cade McCarthy spoke candidly after the opener and it opened some eyes and JJ McCarthy posted a cryptic meme on Instagram about letting go of egos. Will this tear the locker room apart? Maybe.
Michigan State struggled for a couple of quarters against Western Michigan before putting the Broncos away but major improvement is needed from the Spartans.
Penn State was decent against Purdue, but not eye-opening, Iowa scored a whopping seven points in a win over North Dakota (and four were from safeties), Minnesota looked solid, and so did Wisconsin — but neither faced solid opponents.
The Big Ten doesn’t look to have a playoff team right now.
