Iowa State Football: 3 takeaways from first Cy-Hawk win since 2014

2. Iowa State almost blew it at the end
The Cy-Hawk Trophy game is no stranger to odd finishes. This game almost had one of those finishes. M.J. Anderson lined up in the neutral zone, and Iowa State’s bench was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. Both penalties resulted in 20 free yards for an Iowa offense that could not move the ball all game.
Quarterback Spencer Petras completed a nine-yard pass to tight end Sam LaPorta to set up a 48-yard field goal try, but kicker Aaron Bloom missed it.
Iowa State had difficulty moving the football against Iowa’s defense, but quarterback Hunter Dekkers and the Cyclones got it done when it mattered. He and the Cyclone offense went on a 99-yard drive for what would be the game-winning score. Iowa State converted six third-downs on the drive, which they converted into a touchdown.
Quarterback Hunter Dekkers showed tremendous poise in the pocket during the drive. He made some significant throws to keep that drive going. Many teams cannot sustain drives against the Hawkeye’s defense, and Dekkers took the Cyclones 99 yards in his first Cy-Hawk game.
The defense was stout, allowing 150 total yards; it helped that the Iowa defense is so bad.
