Scott Frost has been fired by Nebraska football after a 1-2 start this season and a 16-31 record at Nebraska. Who will the Huskers hire?

Earlier today, Trev Albert informed Scott Frost that he would no longer be the head coach of Nebraska:

“Earlier today, I met with Coach Frost and informed him we were making a change in the leadership of our football program, effective immediately. Scott has poured his heart and soul into the Nebraska Football program both as a quarterback and head coach, and I appreciate his work and dedication,” Nebraska vice chancellor for athletics Trev Alberts said in a statement.

It is easy to point to the 16-31 record at Nebraska as to why Scott Frost was fired today. That record was a manifestation of a poorly run program. If there was one question about hiring Frost, it was whether or not he could duplicate what he did as offensive coordinator at Oregon and head coach of UCF.

Both places had built-in advantages. Oregon had a pipeline to southern California after the fall of USC. UCF is in one of the most talent-rich states in college football, with plenty of players who fit Frost’s system. Nebraska could never recruit the caliber of player offensively to compete consistently in the Big Ten.

Nebraska’s best recruiting class was 18th (2019). Most of Nebraska’s top signees never developed or transferred to finish their careers elsewhere. Most notably, all-purpose running back Wan’Dale Robinson and quarterback Adrian Martinez transferred from the program.

Frost’s teams were marked on the field by poor execution, a lack of discipline, and fundamental miscues. The Cornhuskers were 5-22 in one-score games. Despite not having a winning season, Frost was given a contract extension in 2019.

Big names like Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, and Luke Fickell will be thrown out, but the Cornhuskers don’t need to get caught up in big-game fishing here. They need to be practical in the hire and bring someone in with a clear vision of what Nebraska can become.

Associate head coach Mickey Joseph takes over as head coach for the rest of the season. Who will the Cornhusker hire to replace Scott Frost?

Here are five ideal possibilities for the Cornhuskers.
