Nebraska football: 3 realistic candidates to replace Scott Frost
2. Bill O’Brien, Alabama OC
There would be quite the debate here about whether or not Bill O’Brien would actually leave Alabama for Nebraska, but going from coordinator to head coach would be worth it.
O’Brien also has experience as a Big Ten head coach when he led Penn State to a 15-9 record over two years in a very difficult time for the program as it faced sanctions. He was able to win under very difficult circumstances and parlayed that success into an NFL job with the Houston Texans where he went 52-48 before getting fired in 2020.
Plus, it’s not uncommon for Alabama coordinators to leave for programs that people believe are “beneath” them as Lane Kiffin went to FAU a handful of years back. Nebraska is not FAU level, by any means.
O’Brien has coached the reigning Heisman winner and helped Alabama get to the national title game a year ago after winning the SEC. He’s coached on the biggest stages and Nebraska wouldn’t scare him away.
I don’t know about you, but I think this would be a great fit.
