College Football Hot Seat: 4 Coaches who must win in Week 3
Dana Holgorsen, vs Kansas
Don’t call me crazy yet, let me explain.
First of all, Houston fires coaches for going 8-4. That’s not an opinion, that’s not a track record. That’s a direct quote from the Houston athletic director during Holgorsen’s introductory press conference. New Year’s Six bowls are the standard. Especially heading into Big 12 play in 2023.
Now, in rolls future conference opponent Kansas. The Jayhawks might still be in the bottom half of the conference, but they’re not pushovers anymore. The days of regular 44-3 drubbings are over. You’re going to get punched in the mouth by this Jayhawks team, and they’re very disciplined, meaning when Houston punches back, you’re not going to get any bad penalties from Kansas.
While I do think Houston gets the win, this isn’t the sure thing it would have been two or three years ago. And because it’s a game Houston should win, that just makes it that much more important.
The Cougars were a trendy pick to make a New Year’s Six bowl. The opportunity is still there, but with games against SMU and East Carolina on the schedule, games like this one against Kansas are huge. All’s well in Houston for Holgorsen for now, but the same was said for Major Applewhite in the midst of his 8 win, AAC West co-championship season.
