Group of 5 college football power rankings for Week 4 are here and they’re spectacular thanks to decisive wins by Rice, UCF, and Eastern Michigan

Another week of college football and another week in which a Power 5 head coach was fired immediately after losing to a team from the Group of 5.

Last week, it was Georgia Southern upsetting Nebraska, forcing the Cornhuskers to move on from Scott Frost.

This week, it was Eastern Michigan upsetting Arizona State, which cost Sun Devils Head Coach Herm Edwards his job.

Aside from a few isolated bright spots, it was a rough week for some of the top-ranked teams in the Group of 5.

In fact, seven of my top 11 teams suffered a loss in Week 3, forcing them down or out of my Week 4 Group of 5 power rankings.

That left the door open for four new teams to make their 2022 debut in my G5 power rankings.

Here’s how each conference is represented in this week’s rankings.

  • American: 8 teams
  • Sun Belt: 5 teams
  • Mountain West: 3 teams
  • C-USA: 3 teams
  • MAC: 1 team

This was a tough week to rank teams. I may ruffle some feathers by bumping Fresno State and San Diego State out of my Top 20. But, the Bulldogs have lost star QB Jake Haener to injury and SDSU has not looked like a good team at all this season.

Let’s dive in and see who made the cut in my newly updated Top 20 Group of 5 teams.
