Rice Owls earn decisive Week 3 win and jump into the G5 Top 20

Tulsa defeated Jacksonville State 54-17

Making their debut after trouncing future C-USA member Jacksonville State, Tulsa comes in at No. 20. QB Davis Brin is outplaying every quarterback in the country so far this season. He leads all Division 1 QBs in passing yards (1,206) and passing touchdowns (11) entering Week 4.

Eastern Michigan defeated Arizona State 30-21

The new team to keep an eye on from the MAC, Eastern Michigan comes in at No. 19. An earlier loss to Louisiana keeps them from being ranked a little higher. RB Samson Evans nearly had more rushing yards against ASU (258) than he did in all of 2021 combined (264 rushing yards).

Louisiana lost to Rice 33-21

At No. 18, Louisiana falls a few spots after suffering a loss to the Rice Owls by 12 points. Neither of the Ragin’ Cajuns’ quarterbacks could get anything going in Week 3. Ben Wooldridge and Chandler Fields combined to go 13 for 28  for 114 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT. Louisiana couldn’t capitalize on Rice’s 3 INTs, scoring just seven points off those three turnovers.

Rice defeated Louisiana 33-21

Coming in at No. 17, is Rice. The Owls used a 20-7 scoring run against Louisiana to get their first win over the Ragin’ Cajuns since 1983. QB TJ McMahon used his 303 passing yards to carve up Louisiana’s defense and keep the chains moving. The Owls held the ball for nearly 42 minutes while allowing the Ragin’ Cajuns just 18 minutes to possess the ball.

Memphis defeated Arkansas State 33-32

After getting blown out on the road by Mississippi State in Week 1 by 26, the Memphis Tigers are on a two-game winning streak, bringing them back into my power rankings at No. 16.

They’ve defeated conference foe Navy and Arkansas State— both by double-digit points. QB Seth Henigan continues to play extremely well, but it’s the Tigers’ three-headed running back monster that’s causing the most problems. Three different Memphis players have rushed for 100 or more total yards this season.
