The boo birds were out in full force when Texas A&M football lost to Appalachian State at home in Week 2 of the season. There were jokes aplenty about the Aggies’ collection of five-star talent which, on that afternoon, was unable to overcome the lesser talented. Some postulated it would scare off the elite recruits already on the Aggies’ roster.

Well, that didn’t happen. Instead, the maroon and white went out and picked up two more wins over Top 10 teams. A few days later, they proved they weren’t dead on the recruiting front either. The 2023 Texas A&M Football class has now added a commitment from David Hicks, the No.1 defensive lineman in the class.

Hicks marks the second five-star commit in the haul, following Denton Ryan linebacker Anthony Hill, who committed in July. That duo of five-star commits ranks second in the SEC to only Alabama and is one more than Georgia and Tennessee, the only other SEC programs to have any five-star commits at this time.

Texas A&M football beat out some elite programs for Hicks

The other programs the Aggies beat out for Hicks is nearly as important as his addition. Hicks was rumored to be an Oklahoma lean, even getting several recent crystal ball projections as recently as Thursday afternoon hours prior to his commitment. Hicks would go on to choose Texas A&M over Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, Miami, Michigan State and Oregon.

As the old saying goes, reports of Texas A&M football’s death have been greatly exaggerated. The Aggies are going to be just fine.
