College Football Week 5 winners, losers: Oklahoma, Houston in free fall
Loser: Florida State Seminoles
Florida State had every opportunity to get their first ranked win at home in years, instead, they inflicted so many unnecessary errors on themselves late in the game.
The Seminoles finished the game with 11 penalties, including three on their final drive in an attempt to cut it to a one-score game. It was an incredibly disappointing outcome for a team many felt like finally had some serious momentum with QB Jordan Travis playing some of the best football of his college career thus far.
Loser: Oklahoma Sooners
The Oklahoma Sooners are in some trouble. They got upset by unranked Kansas State by seven last week and they got upset by unranked TCU by 31 points. QB Dillon Gabriel went down with an injury in the game, but this is a college football team stocked with talent on a deep roster. There’s no way this team should be losing to anyone by 31 points, let alone an unranked Horned Frogs team in Sonny Dykes’ first year as the team’s coach.
How does one follow up a bad loss with an even worse loss only one week later? The Sooners need to get things figured out and quick or the fans are going to have some buyer’s remorse with Brent Venables as the team’s head coach.
Loser: Houston Cougars Head Coach Dana Holgorsen
Things aren’t looking so good for Houston Head Coach Dana Holgorsen. The Cougars have lost three of their last four games and are currently 2-3 on the season. This is a team that everyone thought was going to follow in the footsteps of Cincinnati and make a real push to the College Football Playoff as a member of the Group of Five.
That’s obviously not happening with losses to Texas Tech, Kansas, and now Tulane. Holgorsen’s seat is red-hot after yet another overtime loss this season to a team they’ve historically had no problem beating. The Cougars may feel drastic change is necessary to salvage the season and start fresh as they enter the Big 12 next season. Keep an eye on what the Cougars do and how they handle Holgorsen.
