The Big Ten West seemed like it would be a runaway for Minnesota this season. Purdue and Illinois have other plans.

We entered the first weekend in October thinking we had a pretty good grasp of the top four teams in the Big Ten along with a bunch of flawed teams and then a few bad teams. We exited Saturday with more questions than answers. Just look at these Big Ten West standings.

Over in the Big Ten football’s East division, things are a little more clear with Ohio State the top dog and Michigan right on their tail. Penn State is also in the mix but may have a few more flaws than Michigan. The Nittany Lions will have their chance to prove they are the better team in two weeks when they face the Wolverines.

Behind those teams, Maryland looks like the best of the bunch after their victory over Michigan State. Raise your hand if you had the Terps 4-1 nearing the midway point of the season.

The division races are going to be fun to watch down the stretch and there are a lot of good football games left on the schedule. The West division is anybody’s to take, even Nebraska who most left for dead after Scott Frost’s firing.
