3. It’s the little things in close games

Anytime games are close, little things determine the outcome of the game. This could have been a different game if Jalon Daniels didn’t fumble trying to score inside the five-yard line. Jason Bean threw a lazy interception in the third quarter. It seemed like he expected Luke Grimm to sit in the zone’s soft spot, but he kept going.

Both of those turnovers resulted in touchdowns. Kansas has avoided plays like those all season. The Jayhawks had done an outstanding job of not beating themselves by committing drive-killing penalties or turnovers. Though the Jayhawks lost one of four fumbles, the other three placed them behind the sticks and stifled drives.

Those fourteen points off turnovers and key defensive plays at crucial times were the difference in this game. Kansas decided to kick the field goal instead of going for the first down and missed the field goal. In addition to the two turnovers, the Jayhawks also turned the football over on downs. When Lance Leipold and his staff look at this tape next week, those critical plays were the difference in this game.
