Looking back at the best in-state games of 2022 going into week eight.
Week One
The two best games in week one against in-state schools going up against one another was the NC State and East Carolina game where the Pirates at home almost pulled off the upset but lost by one and missed a game-winning field goal. The other great game was a very high-scoring game when App State at home almost pulled off the upset against North Carolina but lost by two points. The Mountaineers would however go into College State and defeat Texas A&M though.
Week Two
The week two in-state matchups had two great games as Texas Tech held off Houston by only a field goal in a high-scoring affair and the other game featured a defensive stalemate as Iowa State defeated Iowa by a field goal as well.
Week Three
The best game during week three was in the state of Florida as South Florida and the Gators played an exciting game that came down to the wire. The Bulls led Florida 7-3 going into the second quarter and again 28-24 in the fourth quarter before the Gators ran it in for a touchdown to win the game by three.
Week Four
Week four did not disappoint as three games ended in single-digit games for six state of Texas teams who went up against one another. Texas Tech needed a field goal in overtime to defeat the Longhorns as the Red Raiders stormed the field after the victory. TCU in a high-scoring game on the road defeated SMU by eight and Houston held off Rice to win by seven.
Week Five
In week five, Utah State played BYU surprisingly close until the Cougars pulled about and won by 12, and Kent State defeated Ohio by seven. Liberty played fellow Virginia in-state rival Old Dominion and ended up defeating the Monarchs by two touchdowns.
Week Six
Week six had some good games as well but they were not quite on par as the previous week’s in-state matchups but Eastern Michigan, for example, went on the road and defeated Western Michigan by double digits.
Week Seven
Fresno State pulled off the upset at home in week seven play as they defeated fellow in-state rival San Jose State by a touchdown. North Carolina in a high-scoring game defeated Duke by a field goal and Bowling Green beat Miami (OH) by four points in a slight upset.
