Utah Football: 3 takeaways from clutch road win at Washington State
2. Bryson Barnes is a darn good backup
In the Rose Bowl less than a year ago, Bryson Barnes came in for Cameron Rising late in the game and proceeded to throw the game-tying touchdown pass with less than two minutes to go.
Utah would end up losing that game, but Barnes sparked the offense when no one expected him to against one of the best teams in college football.
Right before Thursday night’s game, Barnes found out that he would be getting a chance to prove that his performance against Ohio State wasn’t a fluke. He was 6-for-6 with 98 yards and a touchdown on the season before the game, but some fans didn’t believe he was the right option as QB2 for the Utes.
That all changed on Thursday night.
Barnes played a great game, didn’t look overwhelmed by the pressure and road environment, and led the Utes to a massive win in place of an injured Rising. He finished 17-for-27 with 171 yards and a touchdown in his first career start. It’s good to know that the Utes have a capable backup if there’s ever an emergency like this again.
