Big Ten football power rankings, Week 10: Buckeyes top the Lions
By Shane Lunnen
Maryland was yet another team with an off week. The Terps already will be going bowling but they want to finish even further up in the standings. They have a tough stretch coming up with two road trips to Madison and State College followed by a home game against Ohio State.
Penn State had a fourth quarter lead over Ohio State, just as they had in 2017 and 2018. Just like those contests, this year’s game also ended in a loss for the Nittany Lions. Leading 21-16 with less than 10 minutes to go, it unraveled very quickly for Penn State as they went on to lose 44-31.
The Nittany Lions lost to two top 5 teams this year in games they were underdogs. Not a huge deal but this one does sting for Penn State fans as the team played well for about 50 minutes and could have pulled it out.
Luckily for them a 10 win season is very much in the cards still which would be an improvement over the last two seasons. They travel to Indiana next Saturday afternoon.
Hard to believe but Illinois has won six games in a row after starting the conference season with a road loss at Indiana. The Illini are rolling and it is thanks to their rushing attack led by Chase Brown and their ferocious defense.
Illinois now leads the country in total yards per game allowed at 224.5 and in points per game allowed with 8.9. Their defense has been very impressive. They host floundering Michigan State before facing Purdue.
