Michigan football running back Blake Corum has been amazing this season but left against Illinois with an injury in a nightmare scenario for the Wolverines.

You never want to see a player get injured. It’s one of the worst things about sports and on Saturday against Illinois, Michigan football may have lost the one player it can’t afford to lose.

Blake Corum, who is a Heisman-Trophy contender, right there with Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, was off to a great start on Saturday against Illinois. He ran for 39 yards on the second play of the game and scored a touchdown, his 18th of the season, on the opening drive.

Illinois stayed in the game against the Wolverines and right before the half, Michigan was driving thanks to a couple of big runs by Corum. However, disaster struck in the red zone as Corum grabbed his knee and went down with an apparent injury.

UPDATE: Corum returned to the field to start the second half and ABC reported on the broadcast he is available to play.

Not only did he clutch his knee as he went, but he also lost the football as Michigan football was trying to push its lead back to a touchdown or more with the lead down to 7-3.

Corum was able to walk off the field on his own power and went back into the locker room for tests. We’ll see if he returns but it doesn’t seem likely. He’s a tough guy but he was walking gingerly and appeared to be in lots of pain.

Blake Corum’s is a disaster for Michigan football

Making matters worse for the Wolverines is that backup Donovan Edwards is also out for the game due to injury, so C.J. Stokes, a true freshman who hasn’t played much since a fumble earlier in the season, will need to take over as RB1. He did have 68 yards against Nebraska last week but still, it would be a huge loss, and not just for this week against Illinois.

However, this injury to Blake Corum could have a huge impact on the College Football Playoff race and also the 2022 Heisman Trophy. He looked well on his way to New York.

Hopefully, this is just something minor and he doesn’t have to miss the Ohio State game, but if he does, what a blow for the sport of college football in general.

Also, what a blow to the Wolverines who don’t have anyone else like Blake Corum.
