We could soon see a changing of the guard in Oxford. Rumors are circulating after a report on Monday surfaced that Ole Miss football coach Lane Kiffin is planning on stepping down after the Egg Bowl to take the open Auburn job.

Is there truth to this report? It seems to be a done deal from what Jon Sokoloff has reported. The Mississippi-based journalist believes that Lane will be stepping down on Friday.

It’s wild to even believe this is happening because it felt like Ole Miss was a perfect fit for Lane, but he has a history of bouncing around as a head coach. In fact, he coached one year at Tennessee in 2009 and then bolted for USC before getting fired four years later. He took the Florida Atlantic job after a “bounce-back” assistant job with Alabama and Nick Saban and then found his way to Ole Miss.

So who could replace Kiffin if he does actually decide to take the Auburn job? Here are three candidates who I think the Rebels should consider.

3. Jamey Chadwell, Coastal Carolina HC

The next big name in the Group of Five following up guys like Billy Napier, Lance Leipold, and Mike Norvell is Jamey Chadwell. The Coastal Carolina head coach has built a serious winner Conway, S.C.

Over the past three years, Coastal Carolina is 31-4 and that’s not a place that coaches have gone into a won very easily or often. He’s done an incredible job in a short period of time and he’s piecing together a 9-1 season currently with a shot to make a New Year’s Six bowl with the Chanticleers.

I would be shocked if this wasn’t at least rumored.

Chadwell was born in Tennessee so he’s familiar with SEC country and he’s been coaching his entire career in the Southeast. This would be just a really good fit. He’s a really good offensive mind and that seems to be what Ole Miss likes to hire.

This would be a home run.
