Lane Kiffin would like to forget this week ever happened. The Ole Miss football coach went from fighting off rumors with random reporters to losing the Egg Bowl at home because of his coaching mistakes.

The Rebels were up 16-7 over Mississippi State at one point but that just wasn’t enough, apparently, to hold off a surging Bulldog squad.

Mike Leach’s team picked up the 24-22 win and it had to rip the hearts right out of Rebel fans who expected to win this home battle against the Bulldogs but this rivalry is unpredictable.

What’d we learn from the Ole Miss loss?

3. Give the defense some credit

Ole Miss’ defense isn’t known for being stingy, but you have to give this group some serious credit for standing tall against a Mike Leach-coached offense on Thanksgiving night.

The defense allowed just over 300 yards, played well against Will Rogers, and forced some really important turnovers, including one that saved the game (at the time). Mississippi State was about to score and go up 31-16, but Ole Miss forced a huge fumble and went down and scored but missed the two-point conversion.

This defense stood tall and deserves a ton of credit for the performance we saw on Thursday night against Mississippi State. Too bad it was in a losing effort.
