Change coming to Texas A&M football or is Darrell Dickey the fall guy?

Texas A&M football has parted ways with offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey, but the burden is still on Jimbo Fisher to enact real change in College Station.

Jimbo Fisher doesn’t ever really make his coordinators available to the media. So, rightly or wrongly, offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey never had the chance to make his own case for the struggles that plagued Texas A&M football on that side of the ball this season. Instead, at the season’s end, he was sent packing.

No one inside or outside the walls of Kyle Field would be rash enough to put the entirety of the blame for the Aggies’ offensive ineptitude on Dickey, given Fisher’s track record and years of decline, but he’s the unlucky soul that will wear at least some of the blame… for now.

Fisher was and has always been the lead play caller for Texas A&M football. It’s his offense that’s come under fire and — by extension — his own football intellect. Because he’s owed too much to be fired, he’s going to get another shot at scoring points in Aggieland.

Make no mistake, Fisher will say all the right things along the way. He’ll hire a new face to assume the offensive coordinator title. But his future and the near-term success of Texas A&M football will depend on much more than whoever fills that role after Dickey.

This move wasn’t about Dickey. It was about Fisher, just as everything surrounding the Texas A&M program will be until he’s gone. If he rights the ship and wins, it won’t matter. If he doesn’t, they’ll just be a new Dickey to recycle next year and more excuses to be made. All Aggies hope it’s the former. We’ll all know soon enough.
