Drew Pyne was a pleasant surprise with his play this season for Notre Dame football.

A third-year sophomore, Pyne was 8-2 as the starting quarterback, throwing for 2,021 yards and 21 touchdowns against six interceptions. According to Pete Sampson of the Athletic, Pyne was informed by the team that they would look for a quarterback in the portal, but he was welcome to stay and compete to start the following season.

Pyne decided to enter the portal after receiving the news. That leaves the Irish with Tyler Buchner, who is coming off a season-ending injury, and Steve Angeli, who might play in the bowl game because Pyne is in the portal and Buchner might not be ready.

This, however, is about next season. Who will Notre Dame target? Here are six possibilities.

Honorable mention: Sam Hartman, Wake Forest

Sam Hartman is an honorable mention because it is unclear what decision he will make. Most NFL scouts have Hartman as a sixth-round draft pick. He could go the XFL, USFL, or CFL route if he wanted to play pro ball and get re-evaluated by the NFL.

However, Hartman is likely more valuable to a college team than a pro league right now.

If Hartman wanted one more year in college, Notre Dame would be ideal. The Irish are looking for a quarterback to allow Tyler Buchner more seasoning. Hartman has one more year of college eligibility and would make more money going to another school or even staying at Wake than he would in the pros.
